Spasticity

Spasticity is the hypertonic state of muscles, resulted from lesions in the upper motor neuron pathway. Etiologies include: head injury, spinal cord injury, stroke, multiple sclerosis and congenital abnormalities (cerebral palsy).

Treatment:

  • Medical treatment: Benefits may be derived from medications like diazepam, baclofen, dandrolene etc.
  • Surgical treatment: In case of spasticity refractory to medical treatment intrathecal baclofen using a pump could be considered. The pump contains a refillable reservoir of baclofen (an antispasticity medication) and is connected to a small tube which delivers the drug to the space around the spinal cord. The pump is of small size and sits under the skin of the lower abdomen. The drug is delivered directly to where it is needed (around the spinal cord) and therefore has less systemic sedative side-effects. There are various types of pumps available.

  • In our Department we use baclofen pumps for the treatment of spasticity of different etiologies. We have a large series of patients with multiple sclerosis treated with this procedure.
